Business & Management Ideas from an Engineers mind.

“A good manager is a man who isn’t worried about his own career but rather the careers of those who work for him” – H.S.M. Burns

About Me

I am an Engineer, seeking to breach the gap between the technical workers and management.  Engineers speak with a language of numbers, pictures, and analytical concepts.  Management speaks the language of money.  Two foreign groups of people come together to form a business relationship and often times do not understand how the other thinks!

I have my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and currently am pursuing a Master of Engineering degree in Engineering Management from CU Boulder.  After spending a number of years as an Engineer I decided that my personality type would not allow me to simply work as an Engineer my entire life.  I felt compelled to move into management by my desire to understand business from the other side of the fence.  In a future management position I hope to leverage my ability to understand technical data to effectively run a business in whatever capacity I’m in.

This blog is about things I am learning and reflecting on as I pursue this Engineering Management degree.  I felt that the concepts learned in class would be enhanced by reiteration on this blog, where I would be able to digest the information, roll it around in my head, and then put on paper what is actually being taught.  In addition to enhanced retention of the material being taught, I thought this would provide a good reference post-degree, to relfect on and remind myself of things I had learned through the course of the degree program.

Please keep in mind when reading this blog that I have no management experience.  My posts are based purely on lecture content, and my own reading and insights.
